In cooperation with the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) College of Engineering, Emory

University offers an expanded degree opportunity, referred to as the Dual Degree Engineering Program

(DDEP). The Dual Degree Program leads to a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science from Emory University

and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering awarded by the Georgia Institute of Technology. The Dual Degree

Engineering Program is sequential and typically takes between five and six years to complete, depending on

a variety of factors. The program is open to all Emory College of Arts and Sciences and Oxford College students

who meet the requirements.

Dual Degree students spend their first three years on campus completing Emory Degree requirements.

Students may select from any of the undergraduate major options available through Emory College of Arts and

Sciences or the Goizueta Business School. Students complete the pre-engineering curriculum while also

fulfilling Emory general education requirements (GERs) and major requirements. When general education

requirements, major requirements, and engineering pre-requisite coursework is completed, typically after the

Spring semester of the third year, students then transfer to Georgia Tech (http://ceed.gatech.edu/ddep).

While applying to transfer in the last semester at Emory, dual degree students must select one of eleven

engineering major options (http://college.emory.edu/dual-degree/engineering/explore-

engineering/index.html) from Nine Engineering Schools to pursue at Georiga Tech. Upper level engineering

courses are completed on Georgia Tech’s campus.

To apply to transfer from Emory University to Georgia Tech as a DDEP student, students must meet all of the

following requirements (http://admission.gatech.edu/transfer/dual-degree):

• For Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, Industrial, Chemical, and Biomolecular engineering majors,

obtain a minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 grade scale due to a larger applicant pool. For all remaining

engineering majors, obtain a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 grade scale.

• Obtain a minimum 3.0 to 3.3 GPA in math and lab science courses. Includes all courses in math,

statistics, computer science, biology, chemistry, physics, neuroscience and behavioral biology.

• Complete 100 Emory University undergraduate academic credit hours toward an Emory

Undergraduate degree.

• Complete all courses required for your chosen Emory University major as verified by your

departmental advisor.

• Complete all General Education Requirements (GERs), except one (1) Continuing Writing (WRT)

course.

• Complete all pre-engineering requirements, as outlined by Georgia Tech, with a 3.0-3.3 or higher GPA

in the Tech required courses.

Georgia Tech Core Curriculum Requirements

Dual Degree Engineering students are required to satisfy BOTH Emory GER Requirements and Georgia

Tech Engineering Core Curriculum Requirements. Below are suggested courses in which students may

enroll in that will meet the requirements for both Georgia Tech and Emory.

It is important students check OSCAR each term for updated equivalency data.

Instructions for using OSCAR at GA TECH:

To determine which Emory courses, you will get credit for, you should visit the OSCAR site at GA

Tech: https://oscar.gatech.edu/

1. Once you’re on the Oscar site, click the transfer equivalencies button (blue one on the right)

2. On the next site, click the “yes” button to indicate transfer institution is located in the United States.

3. Select Georgia on the drop-down menu to indicate which state you’re transferring from and then the “get state” button

4. Select Emory University on the drop-down menu of schools and then click the “get school” button

5. To see what physics courses count at Ga Tech (for example), select “PHYS” in the subject colum

- Select “undergraduate” in the level column

- In the term column go the whole way to the bottom and select “see equivalent data from all terms “

You’ll see that no transfer credit is awarded for Physics 141 and Physics 142. However, Physics 151 and 152 do get you

transfer credit for the intro physics I and II at GA Tech.

electives may be selected from Chemistry, Biology, Physics, EAS, NBB, or CS. Some course not offered at Emory can be taken at Georgia Tech prior to transferring via

: Emory doesn’t currently offer a single semester chem course for Engineers. Both 150 and 202 or (141 and 142) w/ labs must be completed to meet this

rerquirement.

: C++ and Java courses will meet the Computer Science requirement for admission; however, certain majors may require CS 1371 for their specific degree program.

Some students will be required to complete a credit hour Mat Lab course upon admission.

: If you plan to use a continued WRT electives, students must keep their writing samples and a copy of the syllabus. Georgia Tech will ask for these materials at the

time of transfer. For a writing sample to be acceptable it must be at least 8 pages long and contain 5 citations. If you take both Engl 101 and (Engl 181 or ENGL

341W) you will have satisfied the Georgia Tech Engl Comp Transfer Requirements and DO NOT need to submit a writing sample.

If AP or IB credit is being used to satisfies prerequisites, documentation directly from Testing Services at the time of transfer must be provided. Please note this

documentation is needed even if AP or IB credit is indicated on your Emory transcript.

Am I eligible for Financial Aid at Georgia Tech?

Yes, generally, Dual Degree students are eligible for some level of federal financial aid. However, it’s best to meet with a financial aid

advisor to discuss individual circumstances prior to making a multi-year commitment to the Dual Degree Engineering Program. A

student’s financial aid package from Emory is likely to be very different from the financial aid package rewarded by Georgia Tech.

Do I pay in-state tuition at Georgia Tech?

Students that meet the State of Georgia definition of a Georgia Resident as defined for educational purposes will likely receive the

benefits of in-state tuition while at Georgia Tech.

Can I take my HOPE Scholarship with me to Georgia Tech?

Yes, HOPE Scholarship recipients with remaining funds are able to use those funds while enrolled at Georgia Tech.

What if I plan to earn three (3) undergraduate degrees?

Generally, federal financial aid will be exhausted before the completion of a third degree program. However, two degrees can

usually be managed to fit within the limits of federal student loans.

When should I apply to Georgia Tech?

Apply to transfer to Georgia Tech in your final semester at Emory, when you have completed or are in progress to complete final

GERs, pre-engineering requirements and requirements for Emory major.

What is the acceptance rate for Dual Degree students transferring to Georgia Tech?

Typically, 100% of students who apply and meet the Georgia Tech GPA requirements at the time of transfer application submission,

and who have completed all GER, major, pre-engineering courses, and a letter of recommendation from Emory’s DDEP coordinator

are admitted. Applicants that do not meet the minimum requirements may not be reviewed.

Can I change my education plans and quit the Dual Degree Program?

Yes, however; to graduate from Emory with a BA/BS, all standard graduation requirements apply. Upon opting out of the Dual

Degree program exemptions from specific courses or credit hours normally required of undergraduate students at Emory are no

longer valid. Courses taken at Georgia Tech can be used to fulfill these requirements in some cases.

Can I be a Dual Degree student with a major in Business at Emory?

The Emory Goizuetta School of Business advises business students pursuing the Dual Degree Program with Georgia Tech. Please

GENERAL NOTES

Students can take ARCHE courses and apply these courses toward their GA Degree. However only two ARCHE courses can be

applied to their Georgia Tech degree. Students should think carefully about which courses they take via the ARCHE program.

It is virtually impossible for out-of-state of students to get in-state tuition. Also – they should defer their HOPE scholarship if

they are in state and receiving Emory financial aid.

Most dual degree questions about courses can be answered using OSCAR.

STEP-BY-STEP TRANSFER PROCESS:

Students in the Dual Degree Program are responsible for understanding the requirements for the program and checking the

Georgia Tech required courses often.

You should apply to transfer in your final semester at Emory. Your final semester at Emory is the semester in which you will

complete all the requirements for the transfer process and finish your Emory degree requirements.

In order to apply to transfer from Emory University to Georgia Tech as a dual degree student, you must meet all of the

following requirements:

1. Need a 3.3 overall GPA. This GPA includes all Oxford, Emory and any other college or university courses completed

since high school. 3.0-3.2 GPAs will typically be reviewed but admission is NEVER guaranteed. This includes a 3.0-3.3

math and science GPA. This math and science GPA includes all courses in: math, statistics, computer science, biology,

chemistry, physics, and neuroscience and behavioral biology.

2. Completed a minimum of 100 Emory University undergraduate ACADEMIC credits toward a degree.

3. Completed all courses required for your chosen Emory University major as verified by your departmental advisor.

4. Completed all Emory General Education Requirements (GERs), except 1 continuing writing requirement course.

5. Completed all pre-engineering requirements, as outlined by Georgia Tech, with a 3.0-3.3 GPA in the Tech-required

courses (NOTE: completion of GA TECH requirements at the TIME of application- requirements are subject change).

6. Meet with the Dual Degree Program Coordinator before the posted deadlines to review your transcripts and talk

about the application below.

7. Students need to complete the Georgia Tech Transfer Application and be aware of transfer dates and document

Complete the Georgia Tech Transfer Application (online via: https://application.gatech.edu/apply/

You are a Dual Degree Applicant. Select that option from drop down menu. You will need your coordinator’s name when you

apply. Your dual degree coordinator is your Emory University dual degree advisor (oue.dualdegree@emory.edu). Your

coordinator will be emailed the recommendation form so it is very important that you complete the application with the

Emory advisor’s correct name and email address.

Pay the application fee online.

Submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities you have ever attended. Keep copies of your syllabi. If you plan

to apply for transfer credit for an English course at Tech, you will need the syllabi of your Emory Continuing writing course

and a writing sample. You should also be prepared to provide AP/IB Test Credit transcripts from the College Board if some

credits are not indicated on your Emory Transcript.

If you have attended another college or university other than Emory or Oxford College at Emory University, it is necessary

for you to send those official transcripts as well. Be prepared to send transcripts from all undergraduate institutions you

have attended.

For institutions outside the USA, a course-by-course with GPA evaluation from either Josef Silny (www.jsilny.com) or World

Education Services (www.wes.org) is mandatory. The evaluation should be sent directly to: Office of Undergraduate Admission

Georgia Institute of Technology Atlanta, GA 30332-0320.

Details on AP & Transfer Credit (incl. Writing Samples):

If you have been awarded AP credit for any of the Tech required courses, GA Tech will award course credit if the AP course

credit appears on your Emory transcript. For the minimum test scores required at Tech,

see: http://admission.gatech.edu/transfer/transfer-credit. If you have additional course work, AP or IB that you would like

credit for, you need to be prepared to provide evidence directly from the College Board.

To see how previous course work will transfer from other universities, please use the Transfer Equivalency table

the appropriate academic department at Tech before credit can be awarded.

WRITING SAMPLE

If you would like to have a continued writing sample evaluated for GT English 1101 or 1102 credit, please follow the below

process after you have submitted your online transfer application: Request English Compostition Evaluation

Upload course information (syllabus/course description). There are two spots to upload documents. One is labeled “syllabus”

and one is labeled “description.” You can merge the course description and syllabus into a single document and upload them

under the syllabus. Your writing sample should be labeled: “your last name_writing sample” and uploaded in the other tab.

Upload writing sample (contact Dr. Frazee for paper requirements – GT English contact Dr. Andy Frazee

(andy.frazee@lmc.gatech.edu). The writing sample should be a minimum 8-10 page research paper with at least five correctly-

cited sources.

After you uploaded all the parts of the application, be sure to check your status regularly using the Buzzport login. Also, CHECK

your spam folder regularly. Sometimes the mass emailing from Tech to our Dual Degree applicants wind up in spam folders.

Be sure to add the GA Tech admissions email address to your contact folders.
