NOTEWORTHY INCIDENTS:
OFFENSE: Battery

LOCATION: 1600 Block of Elk Boulevard

The victim was in the 1600 Block of Elk Boulevard when the three known offenders
approached him and battered him. The altercation was broken apart by a third party,
after which, the offenders left. This incident was delayed in reporting, time of report was
9:56 p.m..
OFFENSE: Criminal Defacement of Property

The Unknown Offender(s) posted graffiti on the yellow posts located in the 1900 Block
of E. Jarvis Avenue. The graffiti is said to be black paint marker with capital letters and
also located on the electrical boxes near the area.

The victim reported being contacted by the Unknown Offender(s) on her computer
advising they were with “Microsoft”. The message sent told the victim to call a listed
phone number and upon doing so, told the victim her bank information was
compromised. An additional communication was made to the victim stating they were
from the victim’s banking institution and advised her to remove $45,000 out of her
account into a bitcoin machine.

CRIME REPORT
The victims white Infiniti Q50 was parked in a lot in the 2900 Block of S. Des Plaines
River Road when the Unknown Offender(s) stole the vehicle. A witness reported
hearing the sound of glass breaking just before observing the Infiniti and a dark colored
SUV drive out of the lot.
Due to the recent increase in crime happening at the YMCA building located at 300 E. Northwest Highway,
the following are reported incidents at that location:

At 10:40 p.m. on August 15, 2023, Des Plaines Police originally responded to the 200
Block of Wisconsin Avenue for the report of multiple gun shots being heard in the area.
The callers advised that the shots appeared to be coming from close to Amherst Avenue.
When the officers arrived in the area, several residences indicated that the noises were
coming from the 500 Block of Amherst Avenue where officers located spent shell
casings near a residence. Another witness stated that after the noises, he observed the
above subject, Dean Carda, in his backyard firing a gun into the ground. Contact with
Carda was not able to be made at that time.
On August 16 at 8:10 a.m. Des Plaines Police responded to a call from Carda requesting
to speak with officers. Once on scene, Carda admitted that he was test firing his new
handgun. Carda was taken into custody and transported to the Des Plaines Police station.
Due to the nature of the incident, the Cook County State’s Attorneys Office was
contacted who then denied approval for a felony charge. Carda was subsequently
arrested for Discharge of a Firearm using Des Plaines City Ordinance. After posting the
required bond, Carda was released and provided his court information.

CRIME REPORT
Des Plaines Police received a call for service at the BMO Harris Bank located in the 200
Block of Central Road stating that two female subjects were in a silver Nissan sedan and
attempting to fraudulently cash a check. The caller additionally stated that the female
subjects provided the drive through teller with an Illinois drivers license and a check to
cash however, neither female looked like the drivers license photo. BMO Harris Bank
received communication early regarding the victims account being flagged for
fraudulent activity. While the females were still in the drive through, the manager called
9-1-1. Prior to officers arriving, the females requested their items back and began to
leave the parking lot. At that time, a Des Plaines Police officer observed the Nissan exit
onto Central Road and travel east when he pulled behind it and activated his overhead
emergency lights. At that time, the Nissan turned north onto Westgate Road in Mount
Prospect, IL and stopped. Both females were asked to exit the vehicle and then detained
while the officers investigated the incident. The driver was identified as subject #1, Leah
White, and the front passenger was identified as subject #2, Donna Staley.
Through investigation, it was learned that White and Staley obtained the victim’s
drivers license and check book and traveled to multiple banks in attempts to cash them.
White and Staley were taken into custody and transported to the Des Plaines Police
station where the Cook County States Attorneys Office was contacted and then
approved felony charges. White and Staley were both charged with two felony counts
each of Identity Theft and were brought to a Cook County Courthouse for a bond
hearing.

SUBJECT NAME: Martin, Joseph

ADDRESS: 847 S. Warrington Rd. Des Plaines, IL 60016
Des Plaines Police responded to the 800 Block of S. Warrington Road for the report of a
battery. When officers arrived on scene, they spoke with the victim who stated that he
and the offender, Joseph Martin, are roommates and had begun arguing on the way
home. Once inside the residence, the argument escalated when Martin threw an object at

the victim who then called 9-1-1. Martin was taken into custody and transported to the
Des Plaines Police station where he was subsequently arrested for Domestic Battery.
Martin was brought to a Cook County Courthouse for a bond hearing the following day.

SUBJECT NAME: Nino, Jeries
DATE OF BIRTH: 03/21/1995
ADDRESS: 21 King Arthur Ct. Northlake, IL 60164
Des Plaines Police were on patrol in the 800 Block of Elmhurst Road when they
observed a Toyota 4-door was sitting in the parking lot with the rear passenger window
open. Upon running the Illinois registration, the officer learned that the owner/subject,
Jeries Nino, was listed as having a warrant with the Cook County Sheriffs Police
Deparmtent. Contact with Nino was made when he provided the officers with his
identifying information which matched the information of the subject with a warrant.
Des Plaines Dipsatch confirmed with the CCSPD that the warrant was valid and active
when he was then advised of such and asked to step out of the vehicle. Nino was taken
into custody, transported to the Des Plaines Police station where he was subsequently
arrested for said Warrant. Nino was brought to a Cook County Courthouse for a bond
hearing.
Please remember that although a person may be charged with a crime, a charge is merely an
Accusation, and the person is innocent until proven guilty.
