ASSOCIATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
Effective Fall 2012
Fresno City College
Associate in Arts Degree
1. Sixty (60) units with at least 2.0 (C) grade point average in all courses/units applicable to the associate degree. Students who complete English 125
and/or English 126 may apply no more than 4.0 units earned in these courses to the associate degree.
2. Residence requirements:
A. A minimum of twelve (12) degree applicable units in residence at district colleges or centers, with attendance during the last semester
prior to meeting graduation requirements, or
B. A total of forty-five (45) units in residence at district colleges or centers if not in attendance during the last semester prior to meeting
graduation requirements.
3. At least eighteen (18) units in a discipline (major) or from related disciplines with a grade of “C” or better in each course.
4. The demonstration of competence in writing, by completing ENGL 1A or1AH with a grade of "C" (2.0) or better. The course used to fulfill this
requirement may also be used to fulfill Area D.1 of the general education requirement in language and rationality: composition. For further

5. The demonstration of competence in reading, by (A) meeting the reading requirement for ENGL 1A or 1AH eligibility by an appropriate placement
test score, or (B) completion of ENGL 1A/1AH with a grade of 2.0, “C” or better. For further information, see a counselor.
6. The demonstration of competence in oral communication by the successful completion of COMMUNICATION 1, 2, 4, 8, or 25 with a grade of “C”
(2.0) or better.
7. The demonstration of competence in mathematics by the successful completion of MATH 102 or any advanced math course with a grade of "C"
(2.0) or better, or by the achievement of prescribed score on the mathematics portion of a specified proficiency test. For further information, see a

8. The demonstration of familiarity with computer concepts and computer use by successfully completing one of the following with a grade of “C”
(2.0) or better: (A) a course in the student's major that has been designated by the Division of that major as meeting the computer literacy
requirement: Dental Hygiene (DH 6B); Nursing, Registered (RN 61); Child Development (CHDEV 46); Radiologic Technology (RAD 2D);
Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCARE 23); (B) AT 10; BT 2, 9, 10, 14, 28; CIT 12, 15, 17; LIBSKIL 2; or (C) passing the Computer Literacy Exam
(fee charged; contact Assessment Center).
9. Awareness of lifetime physical and mental wellness demonstrated by completion of one course: CHDEV 38/PSY 38, HLTH 1, PSY 2, 2H, or 33.
10. Completion of two courses in Physical Education and/or dance. Exceptions will be considered for those students who are veterans, P.O.S.T.
program candidates, Basic Fire Academy graduates or who submit a physician's statement certifying that they are not physically able to participate
in physical education classes. Physical Education courses that WILL meet this requirement are: 3-7, 9, 11-15C, 17, 23, 25, 29B-42B, 29C-42C, and
50-55.
11. Completion of one course on the principles of national, state, and local government including the study of American institutions and ideals: POLSCI
2, 2H, OR 110. Course may also meet Area B.1 of general education in social and behavioral sciences. Out of state students and those who had a
course in which all topics were not covered, must take POLSCI 2, 2H, or 110.
12. A minimum of eighteen (18) units in general education with at least three (3) units in each of the following categories: (See the “General
Education Requirements for the Associate Degree” for the courses available within these areas):
A. Natural Sciences (3 units) C. Humanities (3 units)
B1. Government and Constitution (3 units) D1. Composition (3 units)
B2. Other Social and Behavioral Sciences (3 units) D2. Communication and Analytical Thinking (3 units)
Associate in Science Degree
Minimum requirements for the Associate in Science Degree are the same as for the Associate in Arts Degree with the exception of the major
requirement which specifies completion of a specific pattern of courses in any occupational curriculum or completion of at least twenty (20) units in
the physical sciences, the biological sciences and engineering.
Certificate of Achievement
A Certificate of Achievement shall be awarded to students who successfully complete a specified curriculum (minimum of 12 units) with a
minimum “C” grade in each required course. The specific courses required for the Certificate of Achievement are identified in each occupational
degree curriculum where such certificates are awarded.

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS for the ASSOCIATE DEGREE

The pattern below meets the associate general education degree requirements for graduation from Fresno City College. See the catalog for complete requirements. A total of
60 units, including major requirements (20-27 units depending on the major) and 29 - 38 units of Associate Degree and General Education requirements are required for the
Associate Degree. At least a 2.0 (“C”) grade point average is required in all courses applicable to the associate degree. A grade of “C” or better is required in requirements
#1,2,3,4, and 7, see below. No more than 3 units of English 125 and/or 126 may apply toward the Associate Degree.
GENERAL ASSOCIATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS (17 - 20 units minimum required) N IP C

3. ORAL COMMUNICATION: One course from: COMMUNICATION 1, 2, 4, 8, OR 25
(“C” grade or better)
4. MATH: One course from: MATH 102 or any advanced math (“C” grade or better) Course also meets D2
5. LIFETIME WELLNESS: One course from: CHDEV 38/PSY 38, HLTH 1, PSY 2/2H OR PSY 33
6. PE &/OR DANCE: 2 activity courses (waived for Veterans, P.O.S.T. Basic Academy, or Basic Fire Academy Graduates)
7. COMPUTER LITERACY (Students entering Summer 1996 and later). Successfully complete one of the following (“C” grade or better):
(A) A course designated by the student’s major: CHDEV 46 (Child Development majors only); DH 6B (Dental Hygiene majors only); RAD
2D (Radiologic Technology majors only); RCARE 23 (Respiratory Care majors only); RN 61 (Nursing, Registered majors only); (B) one
course from AT 10; BT 1, 2, 9, 10, 14, 28; CIT 12, 15, 17; LIBSKL 2; (C) or pass the Computer Literacy Examination.
