Electrical Permits
Under the Alberta Safety Codes Act and
Permit Regulations, an Electrical Permit is
required to install, alter or add to an
electrical system and applies to all
residential, commercial, industrial and
institutional installations.
All electrical installations require a permit,
including:
- New construction
- Renovations/alterations
- Electrical service upgrades
- Fire alarm systems
- Lighting retrofits
- Air conditioning systems
- Any addition to an electrical system,
including:
Adding new circuits/wiring for
receptacles and/or lighting
Repair/replace aluminum
wiring
Solar voltaic systems and
electric signs
For Homeowners
Homeowners must own and occupy the
property and be completing the work
themselves to obtain a permit.
HOMEOWNERS ARE ALLOWED TO DO
THE FOLLOWING ELECTRICAL WORK
IN A SINGLE FAMILY DWELLING YOU
OWN AND OCCUPY
1) All branch circuit wiring.
2) Connect the branch circuits to the
branch circuit breakers.
3) Mount devices/covers and fixtures.
HOMEOWNERS ARE NOT ALLOWED
TO DO THE FOLLOWING:
1) Install the underground portion of the
service cable.
2) Install the electrical meter enclosure
and associated conduit.
3) Install the service entrance conductors
between the meter enclosure and the
service equipment (panel).
4) Mount the electrical panel.
5) Ground the service equipment
6) Electrical service upgrades/panel
change.
7) Bonding electrical service to water and
gas piping.
8) Swimming pool electrical connections.
9) Therapeutic pool or tub electrical
connections.
10) Temporary construction services.
11) Rental Occupancies.
12) Solar voltaic systems.
MECHANICAL PERMIT APPLICATION SERIES
For Contractors
A Contractor must have an
Electrical Masters Certificate
In good standing with the Alberta Electrical
Masters Provincial Program, and a
City of St. Albert Business License
when applying for permits.
A permit must be obtained prior to starting
any work and booking inspections.
Arrange a rough-in inspection when the
installation is complete, but not covered
(pre-drywall).
Arrange a final inspection when the
installation and project is completed.
