NEW
PARENT & FAMILY
ORIENTATION
It is our pleasure to
welcome you to the UCLA
community and invite you to
participate in one of our New Parent &
Family Orientation sessions this summer.
As parents and family members, finding out that your
student has been admitted to UCLA is an exciting time, but also
one that raises many questions about whats next. For your students,
there is New Student Orientation to provide a supportive and thorough
introduction to the UCLA community – and we hope you will encourage your
student to participate. For you, there is New Parent & Family Orientation, an
equally important part of the process as you support your student in this next
chapter of their lives.
New Parent & Family Orientation is designed to provide a wealth
of information, including the wide array of academic programs and
opportunities; the role of families in promoting student success; essential
services dedicated to student health, well-being, and safety; campus
involvement; and the student experience.
We are excited to welcome you to the UCLA community and are committed
to providing you with everything you need to know for a successful and safe
transition to Bruin life. During the session, you will have the opportunity to
meet with New Student Advisors who can share insights on their transition
and journey at UCLA. These trained undergraduates will be available to you all
day to address your questions.
As family members of a new UCLA Bruin, you must be very proud. It is a
distinction that reflects the accomplishments of your student, as well as
your influence in guiding and supporting them. We hope that you can join
us at a New Parent & Family Orientation session so that you can discover
ways to continue supporting your students academic success and personal
development while at UCLA.

SUMMER
2023
NEW
STUDENT
ACADEMIC
PROGRAMS
As one of the units that comprises the
Division of Undergraduate Education, New
Student Academic Programs is designed to
serve the educational planning, academic
advising, and adjustment needs of all
entering UCLA undergraduates. Our mission
is to provide a well-rounded academic
onboarding experience that supports UCLA
students and their families as new students
begin their undergraduate education.
New Parent & Family Orientation is one-day long and designed to address
the questions and concerns of family members about UCLA. Your student
should attend a New Student Orientation session.
The day includes an opening address and presentations on UCLAs academic
degree and educational opportunities, university services, campus safety, and
the student experience. The presentations are given by professionals from
across the university, facilitated by New Student Advisors.
New Parent & Family Orientation activities are held separately from the
student session and welcome family members of both first year and transfer
students, and most coincide with the last day of a First Year New Student
Orientation session. New Parent & Family Orientation session 301 will be
held on a Saturday. This session does not correspond with a specific First
Year New Student Orientation session and is open to any parents and family
members that would prefer to attend a session on a weekend.
YOUNGBRUINS
In order to make the New Parent & Family Orientation experience enjoyable
for all family members, we offer activities for children ages 5-17 as part of the
scheduled days program. If you plan to bring children with you to your New
Parent & Family Orientation session, please be sure to include their names and
ages on your reservation.
Parents who wish to have their children participate in the Young Bruins session
will be required to sign a waiver of liability at the beginning of the session.
FAMILY

Once you have read the information, you can sign up for your session date.
You will need your student’s UCLA ID number in order to make a reservation.

UCLA FERPA Policy and Third Party Access
registrar.ucla.edu/Student-Records/Student-Rights-Privacy
Once a student turns 18, or attends a school beyond the high school level, the
University cannot release information about the student to anyone, including
parents or family members, because of the federal Family Educational Rights
and Privacy Act (FERPA). In order to assist students and families in working
together within the guidelines of FERPA, UCLAs MyUCLA allows students to set
up Third-Party Access to certain information for parents or guardians.

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION POLICY
RIGHT TO PRIVACY
We want your New Parent & Family Orientation session to be as accessible
and informative as possible. Please provide us with advance notice of
your needs and we will make every effort to assist you. If you prefer an
interpreter, we may have a fluent speaker in your language. We can also
assist if you require ability-related accommodations or have dietary
restrictions. Please let us know your needs in the appropriate section on
your reservation.
Although it is our hope that all students attending New Student Orientation
take advantage of everything offered during their session, we are not
responsible if students fail to attend or participate in any part of their
session. Students who do not participate in all the events offered at
New Student Orientation can jeopardize their academic advising and
course enrollment.
In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA),
we protect the confidentiality of records for students 18 years old or older
during the session. Access to a student’s New Student Orientation records
— including all financial records — will be given to that student only, unless
the student has given consent.
Please see more information under
“Parent Resources” regarding how FERPA
applies once your student is enrolled.
